Radiologist's Description: The normal thyroid gland is comprised of two elongated, fusiform, smooth and homogeneous lobes. This longitudinal image reveals a uniformly homogeneous, fusiform, soft tissue structure located in the near field, which broadly opposes the main carotid artery. The cranial extremity of the thyroid lobe is located at the level of the bifurcation of the internal and external branches of the carotid artery. It is important to not confuse the thyroid lobe with muscle tissue as they tend to have similar echogenicity. Color flow or Power flow Doppler (evident here) may be used to delineate the carotid artery and help locate the thyroid lobe, seen in the near field adjacent to this artery.
Definitive Diagnosis: Normal Thyroid.
