Name: Fido
Signalment: 8 month old MN Beagle
Radiologist's Description: The segment of intestine within the near field represents a normally empty and contracted colon. The colonic wall is significantly thicker when empty and delineation between wall layers is obvious. The noted subtle corrugation is a common feature of the colon in an empty state. The segment of intestine within the far field represents a normal segment of small bowel. Delineation of the wall layers is easily identifiable (arrows): Serosa (thin, hyperechoic), muscularis thin, hypoechoic), submucosa (thin, hyperechoic), mucosa (thick, hypoechoic in small intestine, thin and layered in the colon). Notice the discrepancy between the thick mucosal layer and thin submucosal, muscularis and serosal layers. The superficial 3 layers should represent approximately 30% of total wall thickness.
Definitive Diagnosis: Normal small intestine and empty colon.
